Microsoft's future vision of Office.

This is very interesting. I dig a lot of the interactions happening here and the trend of different interactive devices and contexts immediately speaking with one another is dead-on. I can't wait for Microsoft to make one of these videos with real people doing real things— kids crying in the background, people arguing, in a rush to make a plane on time, playing extreme sports, at a hospital, etc.. This broadly painted future seems a bit sterile, with lots of interactive graphs and helvetica. I'm interested in seeing Microsoft really take a step back and redefine what it means to be 'productive' and not just try to make our social and work tasks more engaging and efficient. It's eye-opening to see the top YouTube comment "and what will the poor people get?".

Technology should avoid making us dull, lazy, and detached from physicality. It should really empower us in a way that allows us to be more free, creative, connected, and human— serving our wits and evolutionary capability, not in being a crutch that we won't be able to function without.

This is a break-down of my notes taken from the 2010 IXDA conference in Savannah Georgia. The following information reflects the main points, philosophies, and insights discussed at this year’s event. These outlines contain a lot of the UX gold found while we were visiting and are meant to inspire further exploration.

MEANING
“Design is the process of evoking meaning.” Successful experiences are meaningful and have a point. These solutions make sense to the user and are backed with unique vision and rational justification. A relevant and empowering significance can be found in these solutions. “An experience of meaning is the deepest connection that can be made with a user, customer, or audience. “ Meaningful solutions accurately address ‘Why’ a user wants/needs/prefers something.

Businesses will survive by embracing organic, lasting growth. This growth is the result of being innovative, meaningful, sustainable and profitable. Strategic design comes down to the prioritization of meaning. What is most important for the business? The creative? The user? The technology? These experiences solve real problems and create real value for the all players in the experience.

Questions: What is the purpose of what’s being designed? What is most important here? What real problems need to be solved? What does the user really need? How does the user want to use this and what’s the incentive? Does the brand story make sense?

ENGAGEMENT
‘Experience’ is a loaded term. Experiences are essentially unique for every person since each individual has a very complex past and richly unique model of the world. Context, artifacts, past conditioning, current conditions, preconceived notions/opinions, other people and mental state all are factors that contribute to an individual’s experience. There are however basic human patterns, commonalities and criteria we can design for. The medium of the experience designer is behavior. The way a human’s behavior is shaped occurs during the ‘engagement’ with these experiential factors (conditions, artifacts, etc.). The engagement is the negative space (activity) sewing the positive space (things) together. It is the ‘how’ someone uses a ‘what’ fueled by a ‘why’. A solution that alters an engagement changes ‘how’ a user fulfills a task with a ‘what’.

“Today isn’t about owning things as much as it’s about tagging, sharing, and connecting.”

Questions: What’s the user’s goal? How does this fulfill the user’s task? What’s the best way to interact with the elements within the task? How does the user see what you’re creating within the experiential factors in their life?

EMPATHY
When it comes to user-centered design, there is no other way to understand the needs, goals, and priorities of a user better than actually ‘becoming’ the user ourselves. We don’t understand them specifically through observation or speculation, understanding happens through ‘empathy’ and actually going through what the user goes through themselves. When we experience what the user experiences, we don’t just see their situation, we ‘feel’ it and it becomes a part of ourselves. It becomes an extension of ourselves intellectually, emotionally, experientially. This understanding leads to knowledge and wisdom, thus better informing how to design intelligent solutions.

Questions: How can we better relate to the user? Why do they do what they do? What is the user experiencing right now? What is their world-view? Why? Is this an empowering or disempowering experience?

HUMANNESS
“Every design solution is a social solution”. Are you creating a product or experience that connects people? Or isolates them? Everything a person owns becomes an extension of their identity and creates a relationship with that user. The interface of a product is that product’s face; it reflects the product’s personality. Objects talk; they communicate and create a dialogue with it’s user’s and each other. Everything is alive and animate in this way. Products that are impolite or are unfriendly can’t be tolerated for long, especially when there are more friendly options available. A healthy balance of humanness is essential, but too much or too little humanness can be seen as either too creepy or too cold.

Questions: What kind of personality does your creation have? How does it compare on the Myer-briggs personality test? Is it Agreeable? Open? Conscientious? Extraverted? Neurotic? How will a product communicate and create chemistry with the user?

SOUL
A product without soul tends to feel dead and unnatural; it’s seen as just an object. Products that are loved (i.e. Mini, Apple) have a deeper connection with their users. They do what they’re supposed to do incredibly well and are a favorable extension of the user’s identity. The messaging and interactions of the product and brand are congruent throughout the touchpoints of the user’s brand journey. A product with soul is seen as a ‘good friend’ to the user, and in order create products that are so easily loved, we need to think of them in terms of ‘personality’, ‘poetry’ and ‘meaning’. The product and what it represents can create a form of ‘chemistry’ with the user (like falling in love). “We shouldn’t create things purely out of our drunkenness with technology.”

Questions: What are the essential elements/features of what’s being designed? What’s the one thing that the solution can’t live without? What’s the driving force and story behind the product? How can our ideas have more beauty, personality, and usefulness?

SERVICE
To design services, one must think about all aspects of the customer/user journey. The service is the process/system that sews the products, people, and places together. The aim of service design is to create high performance and synergy between these elements. A good service knows the user. It is conscientious and comfortably humane without being annoying or seemingly creepy.

All services are becoming social and adapting more personally to the user’s needs. All this must be built on the foundation of an effective system. Without an effective network or system, there is no connection or communication between product and user. Systems should technologically feed and build off of one another. Don’t create something new unless a new solution is needed; focus on leveraging existing, useful systems first.

Questions: What does the infrastructure of this business system look like? Which points of the business system interface with the user? Focus on what’s essential: Do you really need to make another Swiss-Army knife? Or would a Ginsu steak knife be more appropriate? Effective?

Tom Peters has said that "design mindfulness is the Mount Everest of intellectual capital". Being able to see the world as it truthfully is and know how it works is a trait many of us strive for. Mindfulness depends on our ability to 'tune-in' to the world around us and just know what's going on with our surrounding interactions with no effort. Major inspiration and visionary creative direction can be drawn from these discovered truths. Upon doing research through my work, the web, eastern philosophy, popular design publications, as well as my own personal discoveries, I've compiled a list of aspects to consider while experiencing people, places, things, and interactions (and attaining this 'design mindfulness'). This list isn't just relevant to individuals of the interaction design profession, but anyone interested in design mindfulness and general observation. I'm interested to know what you think of these aspects and if you have any suggestions that could make this better.

Mind - Keep an open curious mind. The more full or closed your mind is, the less you can take in, investigate, and learn from.

Inquiry - Question everything. What are the pros / cons / interesting points? What do people see? What do they miss? Why?

Focus - Be willing to explore something for an extensive period of time. If something seems boring, look closer. Think-through the purpose and function behind the evidence and form of things. Have some idea of what you're looking for and any specific inquiries you need to have answered.

Senses - Use all of your senses and feelings in your investigations. What senses does this experience stimulate?

Feeling - How does this make you feel? What does it do to your feelings? your brain? is it an empowering experience? inspiring?

Seeing - Always be looking and noticing. Look for patterns and make connections.

Logic - What does and doesn't make sense? Where are the break-downs in understanding? Why?

Behavior - Consider everything alive and animate. How does everything behave and relate to one another? What causes shifts in behavior? How do people behave or change when interacting with something? How do people engage with it? How do they feel about it? Why?

Communication - What does something say (it's message) and what conversations does it create (it's dialogue)? Create your own personal dialogue with the environment and experience. Talk to it. How is the language and nomenclature creating cultural connection/relevance? How clear / understandable is the message? What causes confusion or disconnection? Why?

Organization -How are things organized or layed-out? Why? Is the system simple or complex? intuitive or long learning-curve? Why?

Significance - It is the most important and popular? What is most desired or cared about? Most usable? Surprising? What has the most significance and meaning? Why?

Eco-System - Consider the entire eco-system. Where are the popular areas? dead-zones? traffic jams? hierarchy / prioritization? Where are things coming from? where are they ending?

System / Causality - Trace things back to their origins. What’s the causality and where will it lead? Think things through to their futures.

Story - Look for the insight and inner-workings that sew everything together. What is the story that everything is telling? How is this treating and defining my journey? Is there a strong plot line and sequence of events that create some sort of catharsis? Where are the starting and finishing points?

Flow - How are you directed/guided through the experience? What are the calls to action, navigation, and way-finding doing here?

Tasks - What am I supposed to do here? What's the point of this current system in place? What are the goals? Why? How is this system creating what it does? How much of an investment are the players required for the interactions? Are they deep or shallow interactions?

Tension - What is the problem? What is the psychological, sub-cultural or cultural tension around this experience? It needs be a genuine coiled-up discomfort and a “real world” reflection of how people think about this experience.

Remember - Document your insights, discoveries, and findings. What things stick out most in your experience. Why?

Share - Discuss and brainstorm with fellow observers occasionally throughout the exploration to refresh and share insights.

This is an intriguing new trailer for Else Mobile. Very little has been publicly revealed about this new/product or service, yet, it's got peopling buzzing with interested. The trailer feels very grounding, yet has an undertone of futurism and seems almost Matrix-like.

As our digital and web technology advance and we become more reliant and dependent on it, we begin feeling more and more connected to the virtual world. However, this comes with a sacrifice for our own analog reality -- our tangible and spiritual world. We become disconnected from what is real and has tactile significance.

Information overload and the anxiety it causes is becoming a new pandemic that is crossing both eastern and western cultures. Every action has a reaction. Even though we have the privilege of learning and finding about anything almost instantaneously, with that ability comes an enormous amount of inundation. Since there are so many directions we could possibly take and so many voices we could possibly listen to, we get confused. We loose connection with our own inner voice, our gut, our natural intuition. Confusion has become a greater hindrance than fear.

The Experience Design Process

What is Experience Design or XD? What do Experiences Designers do? This infographic designed by David Armano articulates the basics of the experience design process (especially from the digital POV).

This field of design essentially comes down to thinking-through and designing strategic solutions for how products and brands interact with people. These designers are the 'why' guys asking all the questions, wondering how things came to be and where they're going-- trying to piece everything together toward specific success events for the user and the client/brand. I think of it in terms of story-telling. These designers consider the stage, the characters, the scenes and actions from start to finish. They want to know how everything will interact, fit together, and what the individual roles and purposes are. XDesigners especially are responsible for the intriguing yet logical plotline that sews the story or 'brand journey' together.

The primary aspect that separates XD from any other field of design is that it isn't bound by a tangible medium. It isn't tethered to creating a specific 'thing' rather, it's medium is behavior.

Old Navy Weekly

Last night's Old Navy campaign launch was an enormous success. (My role in the campaign has been to spear-head the interaction and user-experience design of the interactive work), specifically Old Navy Weekly. The purpose of the Old Navy Weekly site is to get users to hunt for the best coupons in an online circular (this was a challenge to design for since people respond differently when experiencing digital vs. print media. We wanted to create an interactive print circular for the digital space.) Once the user finds the coupon they want, they print it out and redeem it at an Old Navy store. The purpose of this online experience is to drive people offline and into retail. Within the first hour of being live, the top 2000 exclusive coupons were already found and printed.
